Abby Joseph Cohen

Senior Investment Strategist · Goldman Sachs

Accurately called the 1990s bull market; Goldman equity strategist for 30+ years; S&P 500 year-end forecasts closely tracked by institutions; prominent public voice on equity market valuations.

Abby Joseph Cohen studied economics at Cornell University and received her master's degree from George Washington University. She joined Goldman Sachs in 1990 as a portfolio strategist and became one of the most influential equity market commentators of the 1990s through her consistently bullish views on the US stock market. Cohen's calls were notable for their accuracy during the 1990s secular bull market: she consistently maintained above-consensus equity market targets at a time when many strategists were more cautious. Her status as Wall Street's most prominent female investment strategist attracted additional media attention and made her one of the most widely recognised figures in finance during that decade. She became a Managing Director and then a Partner at Goldman Sachs and was named to Goldman's board. Her influence extended beyond market forecasting to her role in shaping institutional views on equity valuations and asset allocation. She remained at Goldman Sachs for over 30 years, continuing to contribute market commentary and strategy. Cohen has also been an advocate for diversity and inclusion in finance and has mentored numerous women in the investment profession. She has served on advisory boards of major universities and nonprofit organisations.
