Jan Dunning
Leads Magnit's transformation from a store-count-focused food chain into a vertically integrated, digitally capable retailer — overseeing logistics, own-brand expansion, and e-commerce at a scale serving two-thirds of Russian households.
A Dutch national with extensive experience in European food retail, Dunning brought international retail management expertise to one of Russia's most complex consumer businesses. Magnit operates over 29,000 stores across Russia under multiple formats including convenience stores, hypermarkets, cosmetics outlets, and pharmacies, reaching approximately two-thirds of Russian households. The company was founded by Sergei Galitzine in Krasnodar in 1994 and grew through aggressive store network expansion to become one of Russia's dominant consumer companies before Galitzine sold his stake in 2018. Dunning's leadership has focused on modernizing Magnit's supply chain infrastructure, expanding private label product offerings, and developing digital capabilities including a loyalty program and e-commerce delivery services. The company operates its own distribution centers, cold chain logistics, and an agricultural subsidiary producing fresh produce — a vertical integration strategy designed to control costs in a challenging macro environment. Key drivers of Magnit's financial performance include Russian consumer spending trends, food price inflation, competitive dynamics with X5 Group (Pyaterochka, Perekrestok), and the company's ability to expand its store network in both urban and rural markets where it retains significant growth potential.
