Kenichiro Yoshida

Chairman and CEO of Sony Group · Sony Group

Led Sony's acquisition of EMI Music Publishing to create the world's largest music publisher, and transformed PlayStation from a gaming platform into a full entertainment ecosystem generating recurring subscription and software revenue.

Born in 1959 in Tokyo, Yoshida joined Sony in 1983 and spent decades in finance and corporate strategy roles, serving as CFO from 2014 to 2018 before being appointed CEO. Yoshida's appointment as CEO in 2018 was widely seen as an unexpected choice — he was a behind-the-scenes finance executive rather than a product visionary. Yet his financial discipline and strategic clarity have proven transformative. He inherited a company that had struggled for over a decade with losses in electronics and an identity crisis about what Sony should be. His answer was decisive: Sony would be a "creative entertainment company with a solid foundation of technology." Under Yoshida, Sony's gaming division (PlayStation) has become the company's largest profit center, with the PS5 achieving strong sales and PlayStation Network's subscription and digital services generating recurring revenue. Sony Music became the world's largest music publisher after acquiring EMI Music Publishing. Sony Pictures delivered record results with franchises like Spider-Man. And Sony Semiconductor Solutions, which produces the CMOS image sensors used in the majority of the world's smartphone cameras, has become a strategic technology asset. Yoshida's management philosophy centers on portfolio synergy — using Sony's position across gaming, music, film, anime, and technology to create an integrated entertainment ecosystem. His approach is methodical and data-driven rather than flamboyant, representing a departure from Sony's earlier era of celebrity CEOs. Under his leadership, Sony Group's market capitalization has more than tripled, vindicating his vision of Sony as a company where creativity and technology intersect across entertainment platforms.
