Martin Leibowitz

Fixed Income Research Pioneer · Morgan Stanley Research / TIAA-CREF (former Salomon Brothers)

Global — fixed income analytics, bond immunization, liability-driven investing, yield curve analysis

Martin Leibowitz spent 26 years at Salomon Brothers where he headed fixed income research and developed many of the analytical frameworks that now underpin institutional bond portfolio management. His work on bond immunization — structuring a bond portfolio to match the duration of liabilities so that the portfolio value is protected against interest rate changes — became foundational for pension funds and insurance companies managing long-duration liabilities. Leibowitz also developed horizon analysis (evaluating bond returns over specific investment horizons), spread analysis for corporate bonds, and was an early advocate of what would later be called liability-driven investing (LDI). His research papers and books, including "Inside the Yield Book" (co-authored with Sidney Homer), became must-read references for fixed income practitioners. After Salomon, Leibowitz served as CIO at TIAA-CREF (managing over $100 billion for pension beneficiaries) and later joined Morgan Stanley Research. His work on asset allocation for long-horizon investors, including endowment-like allocations, extended his influence into the equity and alternative investment space.
