Paul Tudor Jones

Founder and CIO of Tudor Investment Corp · Tudor Investment Corp

Built one of the most enduring macro trading franchises across four decades — combining technical analysis, economic cycles, and disciplined risk management to compound through every major market crisis since 1980.

Born in 1954 in Memphis, Tennessee, Jones grew up in a family with a history in the cotton trading business and developed an early interest in markets. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1976 and went on to work as a commodity trading advisor under his cousin William Dunavant Jr., a cotton merchant. Jones founded Tudor Investment Corp in 1980 with $1.5 million in capital and built it into one of the most respected macro trading firms in the world, managing approximately $12 billion as of recent years. The firm employs systematic and discretionary approaches across global macro, equity, fixed income, and commodity strategies. His most famous moment came on October 19, 1987 — Black Monday — when he had correctly positioned Tudor's portfolio short S&P 500 futures. As the market crashed 22.6% in a single session, Tudor BVI Fund gained approximately 62% for the month and 200% for 1987. The trade was documented in the PBS documentary "Trader" which became a cult classic in finance. Jones is known for his use of technical analysis combined with macro fundamentals, and for his emphasis on risk management. He famously keeps a large sign in his office reading "Losers Average Losers." His approach to markets was featured prominently in Jack Schwager's Market Wizards series. He has been a significant philanthropist through the Robin Hood Foundation, which he co-founded in 1988 to fight poverty in New York City, and through Just Capital, an organization he founded to track and rank companies on socially responsible criteria.
